Hey everyone:
Thanks for your help in locating some vary rare Mikuni throttle slides and diaphrarms. I worked extensively with Robert and his staff this last month and right now I am looking at the parts I needed, just delivered today. The key to doing business is not using a telephone. Robert favors the computer. Stay with his website, browse and order. It's very easy to use.
A hint is to send a spare set of your used parts to him to confirm correct product and measurements.
I don't think I would have found Robert in Kennesaw Georgia without the help from the club's list. You guys rock. Darn right I will buy again !
The GPZ will be on the road this weekend............Chal DeCecco |

Hi Robert,
Thought I'd give you an update on my Intruder.......................
Believe it or not! I just got my bike back yesterday...my mechanic got the
Flu real bad and was out of work almost a month...he's better now.
He was real impressed with the carbs, when he hooked all the lines and cables
he said it fired off the first time and run real smooth. I don't think he
test-drove it, he just called me and said it was ready, I didn't ask
questions, I just wanted my bike back.
(Saturday 03/19/05) I took it out for a test drive and found out that it would
hesitate when I really got on the throttle in 3rd gear (as you said). I came
back and read your note with the jets (I have never pulled the carbs off any
bike in my life, but I knew I couldn't take it to anyone without a 6 month
wait to get it back, so I got the manual and started taking stuff off.) well
after a little while I got them off and took the plates off, saw the main
jets, I took out the 157.5 and replaced it with the 160 and put in the 162.5
and put all the pieces back and test drove it and it's prefect now. I got down
on the throttle as hard as I have ever got on it and it performed perfect, not
a bit of hesitation. This is the way I will leave it.
Robert, you are a "genius" I have had 3 or 4 people work on this bike with the
carbs and it would run a little while but then would start messing up later.
Thank you.........
If you ever need a referral to anyone please don't hesitate to ask me.
Again thanks Robert
Sincerely,
Harold Dudley |

Bob,
Received my carbs this morning.
The bike fired up perfectly, hitting evenly on both cylinders, It warmed
up well and idled down perfectly. Took a quick spin and found it to rev
strongly and evenly to the red line. It feels like modifying the pilot jet
was the right move. It clearly is a bit more even and less hesitant at
idle, and idle is perfectly smooth and even. Thanks for your persistence.
The final quality of the work was everything I could desire, and the
refinish work on the black carbs was beautiful.

I just wanted to thank you for a quick and great job
you did on my 82 Virago. My carb had been worked on by several different
hands with no success. After your installation of my intake and your
modifications and adjustments, I can now enjoy long distance rides with no
fear of being stranded. I have Yet to foul a plug, were as a good 5
miles would have taken care of that before Your service. Thanks
again, I will spread the word of your excellent work.

I received the jets and
rebuild kits from Motorcycle carbs, and I have to compliment them on their
service. Got what I needed and in time to put it all together over the
weekend.

In an email to a friend we
were BCCed:
Check out www.motorcyclecarbs.com.
I recently purchased a 1980 Yamaha XS850 special. Carb parts are all
but nonexistent. My triple carbs were very bad after sitting for 6 years.
I contacted motorcyclecarbs.com. They have set the business up,
just because the owner couldn't find parts or persons to do vintage carb
rebuilding. For the cost of rebuilding my carbs, He overnighted me a
replacement set of pristine rebuilt carbs. They also have access to parts
that are no longer available (some they have made). Parts such as jets, if
the bike has an aftermarket exhaust that breathes better than the original
and now runs badly. On their web page they have a bunch of tech tips for
tuning and diagnosing lean/rich conditions.

Well, after
many hours of trying, I was unable to dislodge the pilot screw on the 2 and 4
carbs. After 5 minutes of searching on the net, I stumbled across (actually just
typed it in, with fingers crossed) the www.motorcyclecarbs.com , emailed Rob the "owner"? and sent my carbs off to be fixed. They do
whole sets, down to fixing float posts and the like. Hope they live up to the
testimonials on the site - I did get prompt responses to my emails though!!! |
9/29
Well, mailing
them to www.motorcyclecarbs.com was my last resort, but it all turned
out well in the end. Prompt responses to my emails, and carbs on the way back, fixed (removed 2
frozen pilot screws and fixed a broken float post better than new), in 2 days
time. A little pricey for me at 50.00 per hour, but I guess you do get what you
pay for. If you are in need of carb help and are not mechanically inclined or
just don't like the smell of the carb dip, check out this site, as they do
anything from whole sets to fixing float posts, that seem to break more often
than we liked to admit..
Thanks for
all the ideas - I'll let you know how this turns out..

Thanks for all your help and your
quick responses. It runs real nice and I
have recommended your services to

I have seen Robert's work on carbs
and it is nothing
short of art. He had a pair of late
model Special
carbs at Vintage Days that he did and
they were
beautiful. I don't think they looked
that good on the
showroom floor.

Wow! What a machine! After about 10
years, my triple is finally back on the
road! This is what I've been waiting
for!
Did a quick 30 miles on some of the
county roads south of town - It
accelerates strong, solid in the
turns, front brakes are a little scary,
back brakes work pretty good. It
easily got up to 80, but I didn't want to
go any faster until I have a little
more confidence in the brakes. Rob
Reil's carb work was outstanding. The
engine pulls strongly with no
noticeable stumble. I haven't even
sync'd them yet, but it's running great
already.
Took my wife for a spin so she could
see what she donated her soap dish
cover for. She wouldn't say, but I
think she prefers the comfort and
security of the Goldwing with its
Lazy-Boy recliner seats and a back rest.
She held on pretty tight the whole
ride. We also tested the speedometer with
her in the truck and me on the bike -
she drove 30, 35, 65, and 70 and at
each speed I was showing within 2-3
mph of what the truck was showing.
I'm going back out to burn a little
more gasoline, but I wanted to thank
everyone for the advice and
encouragement.
C'mon, let's go for a ride!

Carbs wear out! If you want like-new
performance you
might have to get new carbs. Or have
Rob Reil overhaul
them for you.

We had a great time in Mid-Ohio, lots of bike, lots of sun, lots of
rain.1,000's of bikes saw only about six other triples, one great 81(?) 850
special for sale for $800, another 79 special with a really cool sissy bar,
asked the guy if he would think about selling it, he replied not that one but
he had another just like it, it has a cross in the back, got it for $5.00, if
it does not fit the virago, anyone that really wants it is more than welcome
to it. Saw a nice purple 79 special from Minnesota in the swap area but with
plates, no one was around though. Also bought a set of black 3-1 headers for
my bike, although they came off of an 850 the fit perfect and sound great. My
old 3-2 set if up for grabs if anyone wants them but they are not in real good
shape. My sons and I did the lap of History where you boot five bucks to the AMA and
you get to do a couple of laps on the track And last but not least got to meet Rob, and see his carbs, he does awesome
work, they don't look like new when he is done, they look better than new. All around good time.

Hey folks,
I don't do this very often. But if your having any trouble with your carbs,
I'd think about seeing Robert's booth (at Mid-Ohio). Since he did the carbs on my '75, it is running better than ever, really!
Smooth from idle to redline. Makes even just puttin' around fun again.
Thanks Rob.

As a triple owner and member of the Y-triples list I can vouch for Rob's
work. I had the privilege of meeting Rob last year at the triple rally in
Shenandoah VA and he is a good guy. If only he would learn to lean a little
more<g>
He is known for taking a sludge clogged and grease encrusted set of carbs and
returning a set of jewel-like fuel metering devices.

Robert
I wanted to thank you for the carb service you did, got the set of carbs on
Saturday and they look nicer than the rest of the bike! I better do some
cleaning! Seriously thank you. It maybe a couple of weeks before I can
have the chance to test them, but at least now I know the carbs will be the
least of my problems.
Thanks again

Hey everyone.
Listen up..
If you have carb problems.... SEND THEM TO ROB REIL!!!! (ed: Motorcyclecarbs.com)
He did mine.. I bolted them up after I got them back and looked over them
(looking like new)..
Double checked it. Did a system and tools check.. kicked it three times. WHAMMO!!!! started right up..
I had to turn the idle down.. it was at 5k.. now its at 1100. runs strong.. runs
clean... Took it out for 10 minutes.. hassle free.
Let it sit and cool 2 hours... Hit the start button and Whammo!!!!! Started
right up.. Idle was close.. changed a bit..
Took her down the street.. around the block.. past the kiddies.. and back home..
Awesome!!
Fantastic work Rob... what a great guy!!!!
What FANTASTIC work!!!

My story starts with a set of junk
yard carbs that I picked up and sent to Rob for a rebuild. My story ends with
a ride consisting of about 100 miles, 2000+ feet of elevation gain, and a
very big smile.
The whole story. It took me about 45
minutes to have the carbs mounted on the bike and started. The carbs
passed my initial test of going around the block without a hick-up, stall, cough
or spit. After I got her good and warm, the idle was really high 2000+
RPM. I played a bit with the idle mixture screws, and the main idle
knob. Best I could do was 1800 RPM...when I noticed that the throttle cable was
pulling too much. Backed that off and the engine stalled. Reset the idle
mixture screws best I could, set the main idle to 1100 RPM, and sync'd the carbs. Left screw was 3/4 of a turn in, right screw was 1/2 turn in. Best
sync on my carb-stix that I have seen since 1980! Did the whole operation
again to refine the adjustments. Best the bike has sounded in the past 7
years. Got her back together, grabbed my hat and gloves and took off! Headed
up to WonderVue via Coal Creek Canyon (hwy 72 of of hwy 93). A motorcycle
road by any definition. Tight turns (yellow posted speed limit of 15-20
MPH) 2000 feet of vertical gain. Bike handled every turn without a bog,
skip, or a pop. Lots of pull on the bottom end and smooth RPM gain, only to shut
her down quickly for the next turn. Once I made it to the Peak To Peak
hwy, I turned south on hwy 119. Wide road
that meanders through the ridge line
at about 8'000+ elevation. Bike was smooth at 40-60MPH as I winded my way
to Black Hawk and Central City. Then took hwy 6 - Clear Creek Canyon, down
to Golden (a bit faster descent with way too much gambling traffic). Got
her home and took her picture. I'll post in a couple of days and let you see
her.
Thanks Rob...Great job!
Pick and choose whatever you'd like
for your website. I'll stand behind my recommendation. I'll be sending those
Hitachi's as soon as they dry out and don't smell like gas.

Car Mechanics, TV Repair Technicians, Appliance Technicians, Doctors,
Lawyers, Plumbers, You name them! Have you hired their services lately ? $45/hr
Electronics Tech's, $50/hr Honda Mechanics, $60/hr Plumbers, $150/hr Doctors,
Whew! What a great price for the complete Triple Carb Package deal ! ($73.33/carb)
$220/$50/hr =4.4 hrs. Probably takes closer to 8 to 10 hrs. $27.50 to $22.00/hr.
Count the experience of "having been there -seen that-done that" plus
shop tools, chemicals, etc + etc+. The best logic to use is "how much is
you time worth ?" If you have never done it before, remember the learning
curve factor + mistakes + accurate documentation + in-house stock of needed
parts + clean well equip shop to work in + guaranteed results. Also summer is
here don't waste a second of it fiddling with carbs, if you are not prepared.
NO!... ROBERT DID NOT PAY ME TO SAY THIS . LET'S JUST SAY "I HAVE BEEN
THERE AND DONE THAT"

I want to thank you for the great looking carbs and tremendous service. The
carbs were as nice on the inside as they looked on the outside. I also want to

I have not been checking the list through the Christmas Season, but hope everyone had a nice time. Rob stopped buy on the way to Tampa
during Thanksgiving. After listening to me complain about
the lack of time available during Christmas to rebuild my carbs, he offered to
rebuild them for me. I had planned to do them myself but let him take them
instead. When I got the carbs back they looked as close to brand new as you can
get with 20 year old equipment. I would recommend his work to anyone. He told me
the ultrasonic worked great. It uses sound waves to create cavitations and will
clean in areas you can not hope to see. Also, it heats the solution and this
will greatly facilitate the cleaning time. If you have clogged parts that you
can't get clean ask him about using an ultrasonic. Send him yours or buy an
ultrasonic (they start at $350.00 for basic 3qt models.

Hi Robert,
It's been almost a year since you rebuilt my carbs on my Intruder 1500 and I'm proud to say, It's been trouble free and is running as good today as it did the day you rebuilt them a year ago.
If I would have taken them elsewhere, I know from experience, I would be having trouble them now and they would never last longer than 6 month and then it would be in some shop.
Thanks again Robert
